HERMÈS Ginza Maison -Morphing Cocoon-
2022/ Shop Window/ Tokyo
Within the square geometry of the Hermès scarf carré, a rich and vividly colored world unfolds. Woven from the finest silk threads, each scarf contains a tapestry of stories. The moment it is unfurled, it reveals a breathtaking beauty—like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis and opening its wings for the very first time. The miracle of such a moment, when life transforms its form, is filled with energy and dynamism, while remaining delicate, beautiful, and extraordinarily light. In this sense, it may also be seen as resonating with Hermès craftsmanship itself, in which natural materials drawn from the earth, plants, and animals are transformed, imbued with color, and given new form.
In this window, we sought to depict the miraculous moment of birth for various Hermès creations—from scarves to leather bags—through the motif of the cocoon. Just as a chrysalis metamorphoses into a butterfly, elements drawn from nature undergo vivid transformation within white cocoons.
Furthermore, by composing the entire window through a light and dynamic geometry—a three-dimensional Voronoi structure—we aimed to create a floating constellation of cocoons. Suggesting the moment of their formation, the spatial frames and the soft cocoons enveloping these miniature worlds rise dynamically within the display.
Inside the cocoons, scarves are born from silk threads, while bags take shape from woven leather. From apples, pears, and wild grasses, a sweet fragrance is also beginning to emerge.
In this way, each cocoon drifting through the cold winter landscape holds its own story of creation, and we hope the window will invite viewers to instinctively lean in for a closer look.
