HERMÈS IN MOTION -WATER FOREST-
2021/ Shop Window/ Tokyo
Following the opening of the Hermès temporary store "HERMÈS IN MOTION" at Isetan Shinjuku, two additional stores have opened, accompanied by a new series of window displays in the Men's Building.
As with the four stores, we sought to create dynamic spaces filled with discovery by translating the movements of a horse's legs into spatial forms, weaving narratives into the resulting environments. By connecting two geometric figures extracted from the movements of a horse's legs with straight lines, a three-dimensional surface emerges. In the first series of window displays, this approach gave rise to GROUND CAVE, a cave-like spatial environment. For the new windows, we attempted to invert this space. The horse's legs, previously perceived as figure, exchange roles with the voids that formed the ground, giving rise to an entirely different spatial experience.
Resembling a landscape carved by glacial erosion, this space evokes a mysterious underwater world that has emerged deep within a forest over countless years. Beneath the water lies a forest of aquatic plants swaying with the currents, where vividly colored flowers and corals bloom, and tunnels of soft aquatic moss extend into the distance. Hermès objects are scattered throughout this world, while all manner of aquatic creatures explore their surroundings, each searching for treasures in their own way. The Pegasuses, having departed from GROUND CAVE and traveled a great distance, also seem astonished by this extraordinary world.
The three-dimensional sculptural forms, whose interior appearance changes dynamically with every shift in viewpoint, were created by carving rigid polyurethane foam based on digital 3D models. By layering a variety of textures and surface expressions, we sought to give the forms a greater sense of depth.
As with GROUND CAVE, we also attempted to move beyond the conventional notion of "objects displayed inside a shop window," exploring a new approach to window design by reconsidering the very framework of the display itself. The sculptural forms are positioned as close as possible to the front glass, while sheets printed with stone textures are applied to the glass surface as extensions of the three-dimensional forms. Through this treatment, we sought to create the impression that irregularly shaped pieces of glass had been inlaid into the sculptural landscape. The underwater topography generated from the movements of a horse's legs thus extends beyond the glass boundary, transforming into the window itself.
Furthermore, as water emerges on the surface as a section through a solid mass, areas previou
