HERMÈS IN MOTION -GROUND CAVE-

2021/ Shop Window/ Tokyo

This window display was designed for the Men's Building at Isetan Shinjuku as part of the Hermès temporary store project, "HERMÈS IN MOTION." As with the four stores, we sought to create a dynamic environment filled with discovery by translating the movements of a horse's legs into spatial forms and weaving narratives into the resulting space.

By connecting two geometric figures extracted from the movements of a horse's legs with straight lines, a three-dimensional surface emerges. The resulting cave-like space changes dynamically in appearance with every shift in viewpoint. To enhance the sense of depth, we carved the forms from rigid polyurethane foam using digital 3D data and applied surface textures resembling the striated patterns of weathered rock.

Through this design, we sought to explore two new possibilities for the window display.

The first was to challenge the viewer's perception through the relationship between figure and ground, and the reversal of these roles. Viewed from a distance, the abstract white forms of the horse's legs are perceived as figures. As the viewer gradually approaches, however, the distinctive textures and spatial qualities of the interior come to the foreground, and the horse's legs begin to be perceived as ground. Through this dynamic interplay, we sought to introduce a sense of graphic dynamism into the window display.

The second was to move beyond the conventional notion of "objects displayed inside a shop window" and extend the design to the very framework of the window itself. The three-dimensional forms, carved from rigid polyurethane foam, were positioned as close as possible to the front glass. Textured films were then applied to the glass surface as extensions of the sculptural forms. Through this treatment, we sought to create the impression that irregularly shaped pieces of glass had been inlaid into the three-dimensional landscape. The cave generated from the movements of a horse's legs thus transcends its existence as an object, extending beyond the glass boundary and transforming into the window itself.

Within the cave formed by the horse's legs, white horses gallop freely, each embarking on its own journey of exploration. Watches, jewelry, perfumes, and other small objects embedded in the red rock glimmer like precious minerals, while a sailing ship traveling along a river hints at the beginning of a journey toward a lake and, eventually, the sea.

In this way, diverse stories and worlds are woven into the movements of a horse's legs. We hope the window will invite passersby to pause, peer inside, and discover the unexpected worlds unfolding within.
