A Dynamic Landscape of Autonomous Identities
This is a new type of repair shop that brings together three distinct services: clothing alterations, leather goods restoration, and specialized cleaning for delicate, high-quality garments.
Each of these three services possesses its own expertise and identity, while forming a relationship in which their different specializations complement one another. Reflecting this organization, I sought to create a space in which three architectural elements, each with its own form and color, emerge as autonomous entities, maintaining their individuality while mutually enhancing one another.
At the center of the shop, a gently curving wall in varying shades of coral pink unfolds through the space, drawing visitors progressively deeper into the interior. Brass-colored window frames embedded in the wall subtly project outward, transforming into trapezoidal forms toward their sills, as though shaped by the movements of people and objects. Within these frames, blinds matching the color of the atelier walls are installed. When opened, they reveal glimpses of the artisans at work, allowing the activities of the workshop beyond to flow into the shop. In the atelier, lime-green moisture-resistant gypsum boards are left exposed, revealing the direct, material presence of the substrate itself and creating a space that encourages the creativity inherent in craftsmanship.
Walls in varying shades of blue form the facade and extend inward, changing in height to gently embrace the areas for customer service and fitting. While reinforcing the distinct character of each area, these walls never completely enclose them, establishing a loose continuity throughout the space.
The counter, painted the same lime green as the atelier to express its connection to the workshop, exists as a bricolage of direct, object-like forms shaped around human movements. A counter extending toward the entrance to welcome visitors, a recessed area for operating the cash register, a protruding surface on which to place bags, and legs supporting the furniture—each element emerges as an autonomous geometry, such as a cylinder or polyhedron. Their intersections further strengthen the independence and distinct presence of the counter as a whole.
The indigo-blue doors merge with their frames and adjoining walls, extending the gestures and movements associated with opening and closing them. Details such as windows, doors, and furniture are thus no longer merely functional components, but acquire their own distinctive forms and physical presence.
These objects, imbued with the movements and presence of people, each possess their own center of gravity. As they respond to one another, they create a landscape in which stillness and movement coexist, much like a Japanese dry landscape garden. Rather than blending into a homogeneous whole, the different elements establish relationships precisely by asserting their individual identities. Through the coexistence of these autonomous entities, human movements, shifting gazes, and the activities of artisans continually stimulate one another, giving rise to new relationships and actions. The aim was to create such a living, ever-evolving spatial condition.
